A year ago we wrote about the plight of Swazi human rights lawyer, Thulani Rudolf Maseko “We are not deterred http://bit.ly/1O4bI43”. Maseko, was born in the Manzini region of Swaziland on the 1st of March 1970, he was jailed last year for his critique against the judicial system in Swaziland.
As we wrap up 2015, we look forward to seeing what happened of Maseko’s cause, his arrest raised awareness around the world and gained substantial condemnation, and international support lobbying for his release.
It was later reported in June 2015, that the Supreme Court of Appeals in Swaziland had ordered the release of Maseko. After a year, Maseko and his co-accused Bheki Makhubu were released from prison, as per a “RFK Human Rights” report. Maseko’s plight remains a source of awareness and inspiration for us, we trust that it will touch our readers too. Maseko spent 470 days in prison, standing firm in his fight, to exercise his liberties and campaign for democracy. For his efforts and resilience, Maseko and co-accused Makhubu were both awarded the ‘(@EHAHRDP) EHAHRDP Human Rights Defender Award’. He also received the ‘(@panafricanet) Pan Africa Net Shield Award for Southern Africa’
